A part-time staff member of the IUS Math Lab was arrested in the Evergreen East Parking Lot on Sept. 22.
Robert J. Veith, Math Lab staff member, was arrested for reckless driving near campus and refusing to let a car pass.
Charles Edelen, IUS Police chief, said Veith had run another vehicle off the road. He said a witness then followed Veith’s car to campus.
According to a police report from the Floyd Country Sheriff’s Office, Veith — who’s been an IUS staff member for 13 years — was taken into custody.
Dana Wavle, vice chancellor of Administration and Finance, said even though the arrest occurred on campus property, it was an off-campus
incident.
“It is a personal, legal matter between a part-time, hourly worker and local law enforcement,” Wavle said, “and we are not in a position to comment on the incident.”
Shortly after his arrest, Veith’s bond was paid and he was released.
Mildred Vernia, senior lecturer in mathematics, said Veith came back to work on Wednesday
afternoon.
The police record says Veith committed a Class B misdemeanor, which, if convicted, carries a penalty of imprisonment of up to 180 days and a fine up to $1,000.
